Focus ignition problems
What's the Deal with the Ford Focus Ignition?
One of our most common calls is to respond to drivers having a
problem with their Ford Focus ignition. Either their key doesn't
turn in the ignition, or their key completely sticks in the
ignition.
Why does this happen?
The factory installed ignition in the Ford Focus is made with
poor-quality metal that, over time, casts off metal shavings that
jam the ignition parts. As the ignition wears down, drivers may
start to notice that the key feels gunky either going in or coming
out of the ignition, or that the key is hard to turn. Most Ford
Focus models are affected by this problem, and unfortunately, the
only solution is to replace the ignition cylinder.
Although we understand the logic behind lubricating the ignition
or knocking the ignition in an attempt to loosen things up: DON'T!
These actions can make the problem worse. Lubricating oils will
only add to the clog, and by pounding on the ignition, you can
cause more of the metal to come loose. A forcible strike to the
ignition might also damage the vehicle's steering column.
While a Ford Focus
ignition repair can be handled at the dealership, you can save
a substantial amount of money by calling an automotive locksmith to handle the
job.
