Hiding your house key
How to Safely Hide a Key
Hiding a key to your house is a good idea. Having a spare key
nearby and accessible in case of lockout or a lost key can
save you hassle and money in lock, door, or window repairs.
But how do you safely hide a key to your home? Stashing a key
inside a plastic hide-a-key stone is dangerous because they're so
recognizable. Similarly, hiding a key beneath the doormat or above
the door frame is a bad idea. Burglars know to check all of these
obvious places for a hidden house key.
For a safe spot to store your extra house key, choose a
push-button key safe. These combination key lock boxes can be found
at local hardware stores. Sturdy, rust-proof and reprogrammable,
simply mount the key safe wherever you want it and program your
code.
If you ever have to give out the code to a non-family member
(say you find yourself on vacation remembering you left the stove
on and need a neighbor to get into your house), simply re-program
the code.
